Early Beginnings

Cluett & Peabody tested and invented new materials for its clothing lines and was particularly interested in preventing wool from shrinking. Not only did the company continue experiments with current textiles, Cluett Peabody researchers also studied new textiles, particularly synthetic fabrics. The facility included a small-scale textile plant to test the fabrics. The lab lasted five years until its purchase by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.

Catholic Central High School

Troy’s first citywide Catholic high school was established in 1925 in what was the Troy Hospital, a Victorian building now part of the RPI campus. The new Catholic Central High School served as the key regional provider of Catholic secondary education for almost 70 years.
